Introducing the Elmstead Pinafore PDF Sewing Pattern
I’m thrilled to introduce the Elmstead Pinafore! Though a pinafore was a garment I hadn’t explored before, I’m so glad I ventured into something new—because I absolutely adore my Elmstead Pinafore!

The Elmstead Pinafore is one of those pieces that just seems to fit into every part of your life. Its clean lines, princess seams, and optional back strap give a flattering shape that works whether you’re dressing it up for work, keeping it relaxed on the weekend, or layering for cooler days. And with thoughtful touches like handy pockets and a lovely V-neckline, Elmstead shows that a simple pinafore can be both practical and effortlessly chic.

Elmstead Pinafore Features
- Designed with cup sizes for a great fit
- Front and back princess seams from the armholes
- Back yoke with optional waist strap for adjustable shaping
- Center front button closure with a V-neckline
- Integrated slanted pockets at the front hip
- Neckline and armholes finished with bias bindings
- Designed for medium-weight stretch woven fabric

Originally, I designed the Elmstead to be a classic pinafore—perfect for layering over a blouse, T-shirt, or turtleneck. It’s the kind of piece that works beautifully in transitional weather and moves easily between casual and slightly dressier looks depending on your fabric choice.
But while Elmstead is designed as a layering piece, you’ll see that it can absolutely be worn on its own. Some testers embraced the V-neckline and styled it as a standalone dress, and it looks fantastic! Whether layered or worn alone, Elmstead is versatile, flattering, and surprisingly adaptable. Thank you Kennis, for this versatile pattern. It has some lovely features and will be very useful over the seasons.
I have a question to ask please. What is the reason for including a yoke seam across the back shoulders rather than just having one piece straight through in the back pattern? The extra bulk in the arm seams could be problematic for some body shapes.
I am wondering if it is required for something that I don’t realise.
Thank you for explaining this choice.
Hi Robyn, thank you for your comment. There’s slight shaping at that back yoke seam.
Perfect! I’ve been hoping you would design a pinafore dress and here it is! I might even try making a waistcoat from this pattern as well. Your patterns are the only ones that fit my body without any alterations being required.
Hi Helen, I’m so glad to hear that the patterns work well for you!
Love it, and it has pockets! I’ve got some stash corduroy but it’s not stretch woven. Any of the testers tried it on plain woven?
The testers are required to follow the instructions, including the fabric requirements. So they didn’t use non-stretch woven. If you decide to try it, I recommend going up a size. 🙂
Thanks!
This is the pattern I have been seeking. And the fact that it has the “Itch To Stitch” fit and design elements, combined with the unbeatable step by step instructions that you bring to every one of your creations makes this an absolute easy choice sewing pattern addition. I already have plans for this wardrobe essential, including a button free, side zip version and a short sleeve add on. Thank you for another wonderful pattern for my “made by me” collection that I know will be a classic!
That’s wonderful to hear! Look forward to seeing your versions!
